Launch of the 2019 SDG Gender Index

Equal Measures 2030 (EM2030) is excited to share the new 2019 SDG Gender Index hosted on the Gender Advocates Data Hub. The index is the most comprehensive tool available to explore the state of gender equality across 129 countries, 14 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and 51 issues aligned to the SDGs.

The 2019 SDG Gender Index was presented at EM2030’s side event 4 June at the Women Deliver 2019 conference (WD2019) in Vancouver, Canada. With speakers from both the private and public sector, and gender equality champions from many different parts of the world, the evening was truly inspirational.

“Too often, women and girls are invisible, with no data or sexist data on the issues that disproportionately affect their lives […] Don’t let this report sit on a shelf. If we’re gathering this data, we should darn well use it,” said Melinda Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, during her key note.

The index findings show that the world is far from achieving gender equality, with 1.4 billion girls and women living in countries that get a “very poor” grade on gender equality. The global average score of the 129 countries — which represents 95% of the world’s girls and women — is 65.7 out of 100 (“poor” in the index scoring system). No one country is the world’s best performer — or even among the world’s top ten performers — across all goals or all issues.

“We need a way to hold governments to account, and we need data with a soul,” highlighted Anne-Birgitte Albrectsen, CEO of Plan International.
